Invercargill Bound
Next on the list was to enter the bike in the Burt Munroe Bike rally. This annual event located at bottom of the South island in Invercargill is a mecca for bikers. The targeted event amongst the many choices was the Teretonga night ¼ mile drag racing. My plan was set to ride the bike from my home the Waikato, to Invercargill. Then attend the rally, compete in the drag racing and ride home.
A bike modify required for this type of racing was to install an electronic quick shifter to the gear lever. This allows gear changing while still having the throttle wide open and not needing the clutch. This happens as the shifter briefly cuts the spark to the engine when changing up the gears. This way no power is lost.
One of the most iconic places visited on the way down was the historic Dennison Coal Mine. High up on the west coast of the South Island overlooking the Tasman Sea. Once we disembark from the ferry hook on to highway 6. The ride to Westport through the Buller Gorge is one of the best in the world, a must do for bikers here. then a short run up Highway 67 to the abandoned mine. The dark rustic nature of this location resonated with the colors of the bike. The onwards via Twizel heading south
